Sturgis 2007 (sort of)
7/29/2007 - Needles Hwy

Needles Highway (87)

Very scenic

Lots of tunnels

One-lane tunnels

Waiting our turn

Going through a tunnel

Exiting a tunnel

We took Hwy 16 back

Also very scenic

The wild burros "own" the place...

...and rest where they want...

...and do pretty much anything they want anywhere they want

People feed the "wild" burros...

...who have learned to "ask" for food...

...and don't pay much attention to the traffic rules

We fell in behind some other bikers...

...and enjoyed the ride

Mt. Rushmore from one of the tunnels

After leaving the Crazy Horse Memorial we decided to take the much recommended scenic route also known as Needles Hwy. It begins on Hwy 87 and you can ride for quite a distance or do like we did and took the 16 back for a beautiful ride. I think that if you continue all the way on the 87 you will end up in the Badlands which is another of those things we missed but will see the next time. Of course by taking the 16 back through the "park", there is a $5.00 per person charge. Oh well, it is worth it to see all the wildlife and scenery. The tunnels are incredible and only one lane so you must be careful to make yourself seen and heard when going through them. The wild burros make it clear that it is their home and you are a visitor. They move when they want, they mark their territory, and they demand food. There were also many elk, deer, and other animals. From several points you can get a glimpse of Mt. Rushmore in the distance. We fell in behind another group of bikers and just enjoyed the ride. The Needles Hwy would be a beautiful experience in a car, but the motorcycles just made it that much more enjoyable!
